Privacy notice
Effective 28 October 2026
In short
Without an account, your kitchen stays on your device and we receive nothing. With an account, we store your email address and your kitchen so it can sync, and AI features send what you ask about to our AI provider. Health tracking (how you feel and bowel movements) is optional, needs your explicit consent and never leaves your device. We do not sell your data, show ads, or use analytics or tracking cookies.
Who is responsible
Modica is run by Artem Dovhyi (“we”), which is the controller of the personal data described here. Contact details are at the end of this notice.
Using Modica without an account
Your ingredients, storage, recipes, shopping list, preferences, food log and expenses are saved only on your device (in the browser’s local storage, or in the app’s storage on iOS and Android). They are not sent to us.
When you choose a general food for an ingredient (such as “Mozzarella”), the app looks up the shared estimate for it. That request contains only the words you typed.
When you scan or type a barcode, the barcode number is sent from your device to Open Food Facts (openfoodfacts.org), an independent open database, to look up the product. The camera image is read on your device and never leaves it.
What we collect with an account
- Account details: your email address, and when you sign in with Google, the basic profile Google shares (email address, name and picture). We use sign-in links, so there is no password to store.
- Your kitchen: ingredients, storage, recipes, the shopping list, preferences and your food log (what you ate each day and your daily goals), stored as one record so it can sync between your devices. The food log can say something about your diet and health, so it is only ever used to show you your own totals.
- Your expenses, as part of your kitchen: what you bought, where, when and for how much (each line’s price, the shop and the total), typed in or read from a receipt, and your currency. They are used only to show you your own spending.
- Allergy notes and ingredients to avoid, if you choose to enter them. They can reveal information about your health, so they are optional, used only to tailor recipe suggestions, and you can delete them at any time in Settings.
- AI usage records: which AI feature was used, when, and how many tokens it took. We keep these to enforce daily limits and to understand costs.
- Technical data: our hosting provider records standard request logs, such as IP address, browser type and time, to deliver the service and keep it secure.
AI features
Recipe suggestions, photo reading (labels, meals, recipe cards, receipts and shopping), logging a meal from a description and nutrition estimates are optional and need an account. When you use one, the request is sent to Anthropic, which provides the Claude AI model: for example the photo you took, what you typed, or the names of your ingredients, recipes and your preferences. While you are signed in, the name of a new food that Modica can’t sort on your device is sent the same way, on its own, to guess its category.
We do not store your photos. Anthropic processes the request on our behalf under its commercial terms, which do not allow it to train its models on this data, and keeps it only for a limited time for safety and abuse monitoring. AI answers can be wrong: always check them, especially for allergens.
How you feel, sleep, exercise, weight and bowel movements (health data)
Health tracking is optional and stays off until you start it on the “What we noticed” page. How you feel, your sleep, exercise, weight and bowel movements are health data, a special category of personal data under the GDPR and the UK GDPR, so Modica keeps them only with your explicit consent (Article 9(2)(a), together with Article 6(1)(a)). You give it by pressing “Start tracking”, and the app notes when you did.
Once you start, it keeps:
- Daily check-ins: how you felt that day (from awful to great), any tags you pick or add (such as bloated or tired) and an optional note.
- Bowel movements: the date, the time and the type on the Bristol stool scale.
- Gut notes: on each day you note them, which of gas, bloating, tummy pain, discomfort, diarrhoea and constipation you had, and how strong (mild, moderate or strong).
- If you note them: last night’s sleep (hours and how well), exercise (kind, minutes and effort), and your weight and waist measurement.
- The patterns you hide with “Dismiss” or “Not related”, so they stay hidden.
- The date and time you gave your consent.
All of it is kept only on your device (in the browser’s local storage, or in the app’s storage on iOS and Android) and never reaches us. It is not synced to your account, included in kitchen backups, added to the shared index, available to the Claude connector or sent to an AI. If your phone backs up its apps itself (for example to iCloud or Google), that backup may include it, under your agreement with Apple or Google.
Modica uses it, on your device, only to show you patterns between your food log and how you felt, and an estimate of the energy you use from your weight and food log. Patterns and estimates are observations, not diagnoses or medical advice, and nothing is decided about you from them.
It is kept until you delete it: there is no time limit, because patterns come from your own history. “Stop tracking and delete”, clearing Modica’s data in your browser or phone settings, or removing the app deletes it. Settings → Clear everything and deleting your account do not, because they deal with your kitchen and your account.
You can withdraw your consent at any time with “Stop tracking and delete” on the “What we noticed” page. It deletes every check-in, bowel movement, night of sleep, exercise session, weight and hidden pattern, and the record of your consent, from the device straight away. Your food log is part of your kitchen, so it stays. Withdrawing does not affect what happened before it. If you start again later, the app asks for your consent again.
“Download my health data” on the same page gives you a copy of all of it in a JSON file, at any time. The file is yours to keep: we do not store it, so keep it somewhere safe. To move your health data to another device, use “Restore from a file” on that device’s “What we noticed” page: it merges the file with anything already there, removes nothing, and works only once you have agreed to health tracking on that device. The file itself is never synced or added to kitchen backups. Because we never receive this data, we cannot see, correct, delete or send it to you ourselves: these controls on your device are how you use your rights over it.
Your profile for suggested goals (health data)
Settings → Your profile is optional. To suggest daily calorie, protein, fat and carb goals it asks for your sex, year of birth, height, weight, how active you are and whether you want to lose, keep or gain weight. Your weight and the rest can say something about your health, so the app keeps them only with your explicit consent, which you give by pressing “Set up my profile”, and notes when you did.
Like health tracking, the profile is kept only on your device and never reaches us: it is not synced, included in kitchen backups, available to the Claude connector or sent to an AI. It is worked out on the device, and only the goals you choose to take (“Use as my daily goals”) become part of your synced kitchen, like goals you type yourself. It is included in “Download my health data” and its restore.
“Delete profile” in Settings withdraws your consent and deletes it straight away, and so does “Stop tracking and delete”. The suggestions are estimates from standard equations, not medical advice.
Shared nutrition estimates
Modica keeps a shared index of typical nutrition values for general foods, such as “Mozzarella”, built from what cooks enter. When you are signed in and save an ingredient linked to a general food with nutrition you entered or read from a label, those values (per 100 g, calories to salt, and the weight of one unit) are added to the index under that general food.
We store your contribution with your account so each account counts once and you can take it back, but we never show it to anyone or share the ingredient’s own name, brand, barcode, your name or your email. Others only see the median of all contributions and how many there are.
This is on by default because the values are facts about foods, not about you. You can turn it off at any time in Settings → Shared nutrition estimates, which also deletes everything you contributed. Deleting your account deletes it too. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in giving every cook better estimates, balanced by these safeguards and your right to object.
Using Modica from Claude
If you add Modica as a connector in Claude, you sign in and approve access on our consent page. Claude can then read and change your kitchen on your behalf. Those conversations happen under your own agreement with Anthropic. You can remove access at any time in Claude’s connector settings.
Why we use your data (legal bases)
- To provide the service you asked for: your account, syncing and the AI features (performance of a contract).
- To keep the service secure, prevent abuse and enforce fair-use limits (our legitimate interests).
- To build the shared nutrition index from the values you contribute (our legitimate interests; you can object by turning sharing off).
- To show you patterns from how you feel, your bowel movements, sleep and exercise, and an energy estimate from your weight (your explicit consent, under Articles 6(1)(a) and 9(2)(a) of the GDPR; processed on your device only, and you can withdraw it with “Stop tracking and delete”).
- To use allergy notes you choose to enter (your explicit consent, which you can withdraw by deleting them).
- To meet legal obligations, where they apply.
Cookies and storage on your device
Modica uses your device’s storage only for things the app needs to work: your kitchen, your preferences (such as the theme), health tracking if you start it and, when signed in, your sign-in session. We use no advertising or analytics cookies and no tracking, so there is nothing to consent to and no cookie banner.
Who processes your data
- Supabase: account sign-in, the database that stores synced kitchens, and the shared nutrition index.
- Vercel: hosting of the website and the API.
- Anthropic: the AI features, only when you use them.
- Google: sign-in, only if you choose “Continue with Google”.
- Open Food Facts: barcode lookups, as an independent service.
These providers act on our instructions under data processing agreements, except Open Food Facts and Google, which act on their own terms. Some are in the United States. Transfers from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland are protected by safeguards such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
- Your account, kitchen and AI usage records: until you delete your account.
- Food log entries: up to a year, after which the app drops them, or until you delete them.
- Shared nutrition contributions: until you turn sharing off or delete your account.
- Request logs at our hosting provider: a short period, typically up to 30 days.
- Your kitchen on your device: until you clear it (Settings → Clear everything) or remove the app.
- Health tracking data on your device: until you stop tracking, clear Modica’s data in your browser or phone settings, or remove the app (see “How you feel, sleep, exercise, weight and bowel movements” above).
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, the UK GDPR or California law), you have the right to access, correct, delete and take a copy of your data, to object to or restrict its use, and to withdraw consent. You can do most of this yourself:
- Access and portability: Settings → Download backup gives you your kitchen in a JSON file, and “Download my health data” on the “What we noticed” page gives you your health data in a separate one, which “Restore from a file” on the same page reads back on another device.
- Correction: edit anything in the app.
- Deletion: Settings → Delete account removes your account and synced kitchen. “Stop tracking and delete” removes your health data.
- Withdrawing consent: “Stop tracking and delete” for health data, and deleting allergy notes in Settings.
- Anything else: contact us. We answer within one month.
Your right to complain
You can complain to the data protection authority where you live or work. We would appreciate the chance to help first.
We do not sell or share your data
We do not sell your personal information, share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, or use it for automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.
Emails we send
We email you only what your account needs: sign-in codes and links you ask for, and messages about your account or these terms. We do not send newsletters or marketing. If we ever do, we will ask you first, and every such email will have a link to stop them and our postal address.
Children
Modica is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. Where the law sets a higher age for consent (up to 16 in parts of the EEA), younger users need a parent’s permission to create an account. Signing in asks you to confirm this. Without an account nothing reaches us, whatever your age.
If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will delete the account and its kitchen. If we learn of it ourselves, we will do the same.
Security
All traffic is encrypted. Each kitchen is protected by row-level security, so an account can only ever read and write its own record. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects you, we will tell you as the law requires.
Changes to this notice
If we change how we handle data, we update this notice and the date above, and tell you in the app before significant changes take effect.
